Dominic Claxton
Senior Developer, Dazychain
I work in the Dazychain team at Yarris as a senior developer. My main focus is with the front end and the UI using javaScript/html and many libraries and frameworks
I've been at Yarris for 9 years and have learnt a lot about modern web development practise
I started way back in 1999, around the time the internet started getting interesting and there was an enormous shift to doing things online. I actually studied Art in London as an undergrad and got into 'new media' and design after seeing a website created using Flash. The program has become obsolete now but at the time it really fired my interest as it was so different from the usual humdrum static sites and gif animations that proliferated the web. So I became a web designer specialising in Flash, taught myself to code in ActionScript and never looked back. It was a golden age of UI design I would say. There were no rules, and no mobile devices to worry about, so anything went.
The web now has matured and a lot of important usability 'rules', standards and frameworks have become standard practice, which is a good thing. Even though my work has become more 'serious' and data driven I still really enjoy the challenge of enabling our customers to manage their business. I recently completed a masters in computer science to complement the self taught nature of the job. I fell into this career almost by accident 20 years ago and consider myself very lucky doing what I do.
In the future I hope to continue as I am and help push the Dazychain app to be the most it can be. I think the future is bright.
We have a great team at Yarris. I love working with the people, helping them and learning from them. I love the day to day challenges of creating a great experience for our customers, problem solving and learning. Every day is different.
The most challenging part of my job is also the thing that makes me love what I do and that is solve complicated problems so that they appear effortless and beautiful.
I got into my specific field, in part because this is what I've always done and secondly due to the progression of technology. The internet is always evolving and is now a very different beast to what it was, even 10 years ago. A lot of people are consumers of technology and it's great for me to be on the 'inside' pulling some of the levers on this wild technological ride.
A fun fact about me.. I spent 10 years as an avid indoor rock climber.
